the man smiles "oh ill be right back,dig in" the man hurrys up the stairs,emma hears a thump guessing the man might have triped

emma grabs a white plate from the table and looks at the food, trying to figure out what to start with. she grabs at a slice of apple pie, instinctively checking for critisising adults.

she drops the pie to the floor, and the plate breaks. slowly and quietly she inches into the living room and up the stairs, searching for the cause of the noise. something thumps again and emma creeps closer to the noise. she comes to a door, and stops when she realized the thumping was coming from inside there. she silently opens the door and peeks her head in.

with a realived sigh, emma turns to go downstairs. it was just a pile of different shoes. anyone could have shoes. lots of them, and who knows, he might be gay and that would explain the pink ones that were in his hands.
